APP Functionaries


 

A chemical engineer from the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur (ChE/1968/Nehru). Mr. Prasad Menon has over 40 years of diverse experience in some of the premier multinational and Indian companies in the chemical and power industry. He worked in ICI, Nagarjuna Fertilizers, Tata Chemicals and Tata Power from where he retired as Managing Director in January 2011.

He is currently serving on a number of Tata Boards, including Tata Industries, Tata Chemicals, Tata Projects, TATA BP Solar, Tata Consulting Engineers, Tata Quality Management Services and Tata Petrodyne Limited. He is also on the Board of Axis Bank, SKF and the Sanmar Group. He is the Chairperson of the Tata Group Safety Committee and the Group Climate Change Committee.

Apart from work, Mr. Menon is involved in various social activities. Mr. Menon is the member of the Advisory Council of IITB-Monash Research Academy. He is also a Member of the Governing Council of Centre for Environment Education, Nehru Foundation for Development.


Mr. J.P Chalasani, an Engineering Graduate from Regional Engineering College, Nagpur, India, is the Chief Executive Officer of Reliance Power Ltd. He has more than 30 years of experience in power sector having worked in both Public and Private Sector. He started his career with NTPC in the year 1979. He moved to Reliance Group in the year 1995 and led the Delhi Distribution Business for the group in 2002. He was Director (Business Development) of Reliance Energy Limited from January 2003 to March 2008 responsible for infrastructure projects such as Mumbai Metro, Roads, SEZs and other Infrastructure business of Reliance ADA Group. In 2008 he became CEO for Reliance Power Limited responsible for power generation business of Reliance Group.

Mr.J.P Chalasani went on to become the 2nd Chairman of APP after the completion of Mr. Prasad Menon's term.


Group Director, Reliance Group

Mr. Lalit Jalan is Group Director of Reliance Group and Chief Executive Officer of Reliance Infrastructure Limited – Reliance Group has diverse business interests across Finance, Infrastructure, Power, Telecom, Healthcare, Manufacturing, Natural resources & Entertainment sectors.

Mr. Jalan completed B.Tech from IIT, Kanpur in 1979; did MBA in Finance from Wharton School and Masters in Computer Science from University of Pennsylvania in 1982. He was consistently in top 1% of his class and was in the Director’s Honours and Dean’s List at Wharton.

He joined Reliance Industries in 1995 as the organisation’s youngest ever CEO. Then served in many critical leadership positions across the group, before being elevated to the current position to steer future vision and growth initiatives of entire Group. He is also Chairman of BSES Delhi Power Distribution companies.

In a decade’s time, he was instrumental in steering the transformation of BSES (Mumbai) into Reliance Infrastructure Ltd. with leading presence across Power, Roads, Metro, Airports and Cement. He transformed Delhi Discoms from profusely bleeding utility into a world class electricity utility.

He was awarded the Distinguished Alumni Award by IIT, Kanpur (2004); selected for IITK@50 at IIT Kanpur (2010) and showcased as one of IIT system’s top 15 achievers at the 1st PAN IIT meet in California (2003).

 


President, Hindustan Power

An Electrical engineer from IIT Roorkee, Mr. Ravi Arya carries an enriched industry experience of 37 Years in all facets of power sector ranging from Power Generation, Transmission, Power Trading and Regulatory Affairs. His association with multiple PSUs like NTPC, POWERGRID, PTC India Limited has ensured that he brings best of the both public and private sectors. He is credited with successful implementation of both domestic and overseas assignments in countries like Afghanistan, UAE, Sri Lanka, Nigeria and Ethiopia covering Technical, commercial, Project Management, Trading, Consultancy and Business Development functions.

He carries an expertise in various commercial, regulatory and associated facets involved in conceptualization to commissioning of power projects like:

  • Domestic and international coal tie-ups: Commercial agreements, coal sourcing and logistical arrangements, coal pricing etc. 
  • Power Evacuation, Transmission and Power tie-up:  Open Access, long, medium and short term power sale contracts, intricacies involved with Case-1 Bidding and bidding on power exchanges, power scheduling and dispatch.
  • Clearances and approvals
  • A thorough understanding of regulatory and policy framework governing the entire value chain i.e. coal, power generation, transmission, sales and trading and distribution.

He is currently spearheading Thermal Projects vertical of Hindustan Power Projects Private Limited (HPPPL) in the capacity of President (Thermal). During his almost 9 Years association with HPPPL, he has been involved with Anuppur Project from its conceptualization to commissioning. Under his dynamic leadership, Anuppur Project has emerged as one of the few success stories in the current challenging scenario for power sector. He has been instrumental in achieving a power-tie up of a significant project capacity. Additionally, he is also looking after capacity expansion and business development assignments in the States of Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Odisha, Gujarat etc.

 


Mr. Ashok Kumar Khurana has joined Association of Power Producers (APP) in January, 2011 as First Director General.

He joined the Indian Administrative Service ( IAS ) in 1976, and took voluntary retirement from service in Dec,2007. At that time he was working as Additional Secretary, Govt. of India, Ministry of Power.

Before joining Govt. of India, he was the Principal Secretary (Power), Govt. of Uttar Pradesh and Chairman, U.P. Power Corporation Ltd.

During the service period, he has had wide ranging experience in Power, Finance and Economic policy across institutions.

His experience ranges;

  • Across institutions- The World Bank, DFID ( UK ), GOI, Government of India, State Government and PSUs.
    During his three years deputation with the World Bank, he was involved with the first phase of reform in the Power Sector. As the Country Head (Energy), DFID, he steered the power reform process in Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and mitigation measures in Orissa.
  • Across Competencies in Power, Finance, and Economic Policy – Design and facilitation of Public policy, Power Sector Reform management, Financial restructuring of public utilities, Project financing, structuring (PPP mode) infrastructure projects for accessing long term funds, shaping regulation.
    Country's first non-recourse PPP project – 'NOIDA Toll Bridge' was structured by him.
  • Across process – Managing the complex Structural Adjustment Operation of GOI, reform process in UP, AP, MP and Orissa. Inter institutional coordination to focus on outcome.
    Considering his extensive experience in areas of design and facilitation of public policy and implementation of reforms, shaping of regulations, facilitating privatization and institutional development of public utilities, his appointment as the first Director General of APP is expected to play a pivotal role in the Association's efforts towards the growth of Private Sector participation in the Power Sector.
